Welcome to the Guildford Chess club juniors section. As part of the Guildford Chess club we run a juniors sessions between 6 and 7pm on a Monday night. Run by volunteers from the adult club our aim is to provide a relaxed and friendly atmosphere for children to come and play and learn about chess with other children.During a typical sessions members will be play friendly games against each other whilst our coaches providing tips and advice on the games during the session. We also play variations of chess, run short tournaments on a night and provide group coaching during some sessions during the year.
For those interested in chess competitions we enter the UK Chess Challenge (click here for details) during the second term and have teams in the local league running throughout the year which are open to all members no matter their ability. We also encourage our stronger juniors to make the transition into the adult club where they will get games against adults and can join any of the main club teams (subject to suitability).
The most common question we get asked is at what age can a child join. Whilst we don’t have an official minimum age as every child is different. Instead ask that parents of children younger than 7 stay during the sessions at least until the child is comfortable for the entire session (note that refreshments are available from the Beano restaurant in the adjoining room).
Membership fees for 2017-18 are £20 per term with discounts for multiple children. This works out at approx £2 per session and goes to cover the room hire and team and tournament entry. The term dates for 2017-18 can be found by following the link below.
From the current season (2017/8) it is possible to pay Junior subscriptions online by credit/debit card or from a PayPal account.
We also host a number training sessions run by Grandmaster Nick Pert – these cost extra and can also be paid for online.
